Today, as we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I thought it was appropriate to go back into the archives and listen to some of the great speeches of this great American. As I listened to "The American Dream", I heard "We must learn to live together as brothers, or perish as fools." How perfect these words are, even today. We must break down the walls that separate us from each other. We should look beyond race, creed, color, and sexual orientation and see each others as human beings - and accept each and every person as an individual, worthy or our respect and love.
Then, as I heard the infamous "I Have A Dream" speech, I was reminded of his poignant words, "...a check marked insufficient funds." Is the check you're writing mankind marked as such? We too often give to those causes that we deem worthy, yet isn't every cause to end discrimination worthy of our attention?
So today, no matter what your background, write a check to mankind from an interest-bearing account. An account that you have continual funds, so that every time you make a withdrawal, you know that the funds are available, and there are more funds in the future to make an investment - an investment in mankind - in the human race. I think there is no better return on investment than the investment we make in each other.
